About Peace Diaries

What are the Peace Diaries?

The Peace Diaries is a project of Knowledge iTrust (KIT) a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that works with school administrators, teachers and students to connect technology and learning. On September 11, 2001 the United States and the world suffered a terrible tragedy, born from hatred and ignorance. It is our hope that the Peace Diaries will offer a forum for teachers and students to gather and learn about each other and work toward an understanding that fosters knowledge and, someday, world peace.

KIT has partnered with ePals Classroom exchange to connect teacher to teacher and student to student. ePals connects over 4 million students and teachers in 191 countries to safely meet and collaborate in a safe, teacher or parent monitored multilingual environment. On October 25, 2001 ePals helped launch "Friendship through Education" consortium, an initiative of the President and The White House that connects U.S. and Muslim students.

KIT is launching the Peace Diaries in New York City with the help of the New York City Board of Education, the educators of New York City who enthusiastically said, "Yes" and with a generous grant from the William T. Grant Foundation. We thank Karen Hein, M.D, President of the William T. Grant Foundation and the program managers of the foundation for supporting programs that "help the nation value youth as a resource."

How can I help?

This is the very first, or world premiere, of the Peace Diaries. Today the Web site provides ideas and tools to collaboratively write a book on peace. In future days, the Web site will offer additional ideas and tools to fill the Peace Diaries digital library.

Children who participate in the Peace Diaries receive real books of their final published works. To offer the Peace Diaries to schools across the nation and across the world, KIT relies on generous grants like those from the William T. Grant Foundation. KIT uses the grants to add tools and templates to the Web site, to match U.S. classrooms to International classrooms through ePals, to train teachers and to print the students’ books on a digital press.

KIT welcomes support from foundations and corporate donors who care about teachers and children, world understanding, literacy and peace.

Students Across the Globe Unite!
Watch the progress of the Peace Diaries Book unfold

The Peace Diaries are created online and offline through the collaborative efforts of classrooms in the United States and in other parts of the world. Students are encouraged to think of their classrooms as a publishing house and to assume roles of editors, writers, researchers and illustrators.

There are three activities in the first book of the Peace Diaries. These are "Build a Class Totem Pole," and "Write A Student Constitution of Rights" and "Vote for World Peace President." Children can research and work on most of the activities online or offline.

Completed work is uploaded to templates on the Peace Diaries Web site and can be viewed by the general public on the Web site.
